Fiji: Typhoon Sina - Nov 1990
Disaster description
On Wednesday 28 Nov tropical cyclone 'Sina' hit Viti Levu (main island of Fiji) and the Lau group. The cyclone is presently moving out of Fiji group. (UN DHA, 29 Nov 1990) Field surveys carried out following typhoon 'Sina', which hit 27/28 November, show damage in sectors of western, eastern, and central divisions while northern division left unharmed. More than 600 houses reported destroyed and same number damaged. No casualties reported or loss of livestock. Extensive damage to root crops indicated especially to sugar cane. Early estimates of total damage cost to infrastructure: 1,5 million USD, buildings: 2,4 million USD, agriculture: 6,2 million USD, totaling over 10 million USD. (UN DHA, 6 Dec 1990)
