Typhoon Vera - Aug 1986

Disaster description

Typhoon Vera developed about 1,020 km east-northeast of Manila on 15 August. (Gov’t of Hong Kong, 1987) It struck China on 27 August, resulting in heavy casualties and property loss. In Shanghai, eight people died and 25 were injured, and 500 houses were destroyed. (UN DHA, 29 August 1986)

The typhoon then hit South Korea, causing US$10.9 million of damage. At least 33 people were dead or missing, 73 were injured, and 6,623 were made homeless. At least 1,852 houses and 929 fishing boats were also damaged. (UN DHA, 03 September 1986)
