1. SCIENTISTS (FROM UNIVERSITY OF WEST INDIES, GUADELOUPE, UK, AND US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY) NOW ESTIMATE AN EIGHTY PER CENT POSSIBILITY OF A MAJOR ERUPTION.

2. EVACUEES INCLUDING THOSE FROM THE CAPITAL REMAIN IN NORTHERN PART OF ISLAND. GOVT OFFICES HAVE ALSO BEEN MOVED TO SAME PARTS.

3. UK PROVIDING RELIEF SUPPLIES TO EVACUEES AND GOVT OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA STANDS READY TO ACCOMMODATE ALL EVACUEES IN THE IMMEDIATE AND LONG TERM.

AFTER TWO ERUPTIONS ON 19 AUGUST, ONE ON 20 AUGUST AND ONE ON 21 AUGUST, THE BIGGEST SINCE THE BEGINNING OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY IN JULY, GOVT HAS DECIDED TO EVACUATE APPROX. 5,000 PEOPLE TO SAFE AREAS IN NORTHERN PARTS OF MONTSERRAT. THIS EVACUATION INCLUDES POPULATION OF CAPITAL PLYMOUTH (SOME 3,000 PERSONS).

2. COMMUNITY CENTRES AND CHURCHES IN THE NORTH ARE BEING USED FOR EVACUEES.

3. CONTINGENCY PLAN READY FOR EVACUATION TO ANTIGUA OR ST KITTS IN THE EVENT OF MAJOR ERUPTION.
