China: Earthquake - Oct 1989
Disaster description
On 18 October 1989, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the richter scale occurred in the area of Hebei, Shanxi provinces and inner Mongolia autonomous region, 220 km northwest of Beijing. According to verbal information from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, preliminary assessment of damages was as follows: 15 dead; 140 injured; 50,000 people made homeless; and 11,000 houses collapsed.
