Philippines: Typhoon - Nov 1988

Disaster description

On 7 November, typhoon 'Skip' with center winds up to 175 km/h hit the Philippines and triggered landslides and floods. The most affected areas were the national capital, southern Tagalog, Bicol, and Western Visayas which have not yet recovered from damage by typhoon Ruby. (UN DHA, 9 Nov 1988)

Typhoon 'Skip' (Yoning) caused 128 deaths, 29 injured people, and 161 missing people, according to the UNDRP/UNDP resident representative. Over one million people were reportedly affected, among whom 45,000 were homeless. 25,000 houses were totally/partially damaged. Damages to crops/infrastructure/properties were estimated at US dollars 32 million. The island of Samar was the most severely affected. (UN DHA, 11 Nov 1988)
