Disaster description

DHA/UNDP Resident Representative in Yangon reports that incessant heavy rains since 12 September caused swelling of Ayewardy and Daung the rivers, resulting in severe flash flooding on 22 September in Wun Tho Kawlin Township of sagaing division. Preliminary and unofficial information indicates over 50 deaths and 15 persons missing. Floods caused damage and loss over 2,136 households, affecting over 8,591 persons and large areas of cultivation land. Officials from Divisional Govt authorities and Relief and Resettlement Department are conducting needs assessment in affected areas and providing emergency relief assistance. (UN DHA, 27 Sep 1995)

The UN-DMT Mission reports a serious situation in Kawlin and Wuntho towns which were hit by flash floods on 21 September. A death toll of 51 is confirmed with 10 missing and 19,544 persons (or 3,987 households) being affected. 500 houses/buildings, one primary school, rail tracks, roads and telecommunication lines were damaged. 2,455 acres of paddy crop were totally destroyed, 20,803 partially damaged. Losses include 345 heads of livestock, large stocks of poultry, pigs and ducks, 6,678 bags of stored rice, 74 barrels of petroleum products and 2,009 mt of teak logs owned by the government.
