Disaster description

Torrential monsoon rainstorms with winds of up to 75 km/h and floods from 23 to 31 July affected some coastal areas. Damage to crops, cattle heads, and immovable property was estimated at several million rupees. The death toll rose to over 800 in Maharashtra, 144 in Andhra Pradesh, 24 in Gujarat, and 73 in other districts. About 550 people were missing in Maharashtra. (UN DHA, 3 Aug 1989)
