Disaster description

On 16 February 1989,a major fire broke out in Mergui southern Burma and took eight hours to bring under control. Buildings destroyed include 3 schools, 5 fire stations, 3 cinema halls and road transport administration department building. Total loss was estimated at US dollars 48 million (UN DHA, 24 Feb 1989)

A UNDRO/UNDP resident representative reported updated damage as follows: 1,792 houses destroyed; 4,242 households affected; and 22,324 people rendered homeless. (UN DHA, 28 Mar 1989)
