China: Forest Fire - May 1987
Disaster description
A UNDRO/UNDP representative reports that a major fire broke out on 6 May in Gulian forest, Mohe county of Heilongjiang province, killing 142 people, rendering 51,000 homeless. More than 300,000 hectares of forest was affected. Over 27,000 inhabitants of Xilinji and Tuqiang were evacuated. (UN DHA, 13 May 1987). As of 14 May 1987, the fire has so far killed 168, seriously injured 300 and made 40,000 homeless. A total of 11,700 families have been affected. (UN DHA, 14 May 1987)
