China: Storms/Mud Rock Flow - Aug 1987

Disaster description

On 15, 18, and 19 August, heavy storms affected numerous counties in Dandong city and Dalian city in the Liaoning province in north-east China causing mountain torrents, river flooding and mud-rock flows over a wide area. The storm centre was located in Daguanzhi town in Xiuyan county and the total rainfall was between 300 and 450 mm. 63 persons died, 38 were reported missing and 860 were injured. 13,000 houses were severely damaged and approximately 10,000 families were affected. 60,000 ha were affected (32,000 seriously) involving 80 counties and 676 villages.
