Bangladesh: Hail Storm/Tornado - Apr 1986

Disaster description

A UNDRO resident representative reported that 100 people were killed and thousands were injured in a severe hailstorm that hit Gopalganj and Pirojpur districts in southern Bangladesh on 14 April. Extensive damage was caused to houses and crops. (UN DHA, 18 Apr 1986)

Following this disaster, a double-decker ferry boat with nearly 1,000 people on board capsized during a storm with 90km/hr winds near Munshiganj on the night of 20 April. At least 165 people were feared drowned and many were missing. (UN DHA, 22 Apr 1986)
