Bangladesh: Cyclonic Storm/Tidal Surge/Floods - Jun 1987

Disaster description

On 5 June at midnight, a deep depression (previously formed in the Bay of Bengal) crossed the Hatiya, Swandwip, Patuakhali, and Bhola regions as a cyclonic storm accompanied by a tidal wave of up to 6 feet above normal and inundated low-lying islands. Heavy rains in the entire southern region caused flash floods in a few areas. (UN DHA, 10 Jun 1987)

The overall flood situation has seriously deteriorated following heavy rains on the 30th and 31st of july and the rush of floodwater from the upper region. The worst affected districts were Rangpur, Netrokona, Gaibandha, Noagaon, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, and Noakhali. About 3.5 million people were reportedly affected and approximately 650,000 acres of crops were considerably damaged. (UN DHA, 3 Aug 1987)

The number of districts affected was 50; the number of Upazilas/municipalities affected was 335/17; 939,557 houses were fully damaged; 790,762 houses were partially damaged, and total deaths were reported to be 570. (UN DHA, 7 Sep 1987)
