China: Earthquake - Oct 1995

Disaster description

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the richter scale (according to the US Geological Survey) hit Yunnan province on 24 October 1995 at 6:47 hrs local time, (GMT: 23 October 1995 at 22.47 hrs). The preliminary epicentre was: 60 miles north-northwest of Kunming, the capital of yunnan province, at latitude 25.9 degrees north, longitude 102.2 degrees east. Unconfirmed media reports indicate a death toll of over twenty and the collapse of more than seventy buildings. (UN DHA, 24 Oct 1995)
