India: Cyclone - Nov 1984

Disaster description

A strong cyclonic storm with winds of 100 miles per hour struck the south Indian provinces of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on 14-15 Nov 1984. The cyclone was followed by floods inundating large parts of affected provinces. (UN DHA, 20 Nov 1984)

LRCS, quoting its chief liaison officer, currently visiting affected areas, reports that the death toll has risen to 446; the cyclone destroyed over 100,000 dwellings, uprooted thousands of trees, cut power supply, roads and bridges, and disrupted train services; the worst-hit area was Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh where 20,000 dwellings were destroyed and 316 persons were killed; and nearly 10,000 people are marooned by water.
