Philippines: Typhoon - Jul 1989
Disaster description
Typhoon Gordon hit and severely affected the northern Philippines island of Luzon on Saturday 15 July, causing floods and landslides in the northern and central regions of the island. A bridge in Ilocos Norte washed away and a dike in la union Province collapsed flooding three villages. Landslides and debris blocked roads. (UN DHA, 18 Jul 1989)
Typhoon Gordon, the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines to date during 1989, causing floods and landslides along with massive infrastructural damage, was finally officially assessed as causing the following damage and loss of life: total deaths of 94, injured 382, and missing 3. Over 95,000 families were affected (representing approximately 486,000 people) with 8,845 families actually rendered homeless. (UN DHA, 15 Aug 1989)
