Indonesia: Earthquake - Jan 1994

At 10.54 hrs local time (GMT 01.54hrs) on 19 January 1994 an earthquake computed by US Geological Survey at 6.9 on Richter scale occurred in Irian Jaya region (epicentre: latitude 3 south, longitude 135 east). (UNDHA, 19 Jan 1994)

The quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale was followed by more than 180 aftershocks from midday on Friday until late Sunday, some measuring 4.5. As of 22 January 1994, 7 people reported dead and 40 injured. Severe damage to housing, government buildings and public facilities. Minor tidal waves of 2 meters were reported from the western coast of Halmahera Island. (UNDHA, 24 Jan 1994)
