Indonesia: Volcanic Eruption - Nov 1984

Disaster description

The UNDRO/UNDP Resident Co-ordinator has reported that Mount Karangetang, situated on Siau island, north Sulawesi, resumed volcanic activity on Thursday, 8 November 1984. Hot vapour and black smoke were emitted. The governor of North Sulawesi reported that villagers within the danger zone were evacuated to safer areas. (UN DHA, 20 Nov 1984)

Further to information report No. 1 of 20 November 1984, the UNDRO/UNDP Resident Co-ordinator has informed that volcano Mt. Karangetang, situated on Siau Island, North Sulawesi, erupted on 21 February 1985 with lava flow reaching 100 metres per hour. A new crater has been created called Dagu Kambing, approximately 100 metres west of the main existing crater. Neighbouring villages were under threat and inhabitants were standing by for a possible full-scale evacuation. (UN DHA, 1 Mar 1985)
