China: Floods - Jun 1990
Disaster description
From 6 to 8 and 11 to 15 June, torrential rains with a maximum precipitation of 489 mm resulted in widespread floods in 39 counties of Hunan province. (UN DHA, 19 Jun 1990) A UNDRO/UNDP resident representative reported an updated estimate of damage by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on 21 June as follows: 229 people died; 3,297 were injured; about 350,000 people were rendered homeless; and 20 million people were affected. Between 20-23 June, six other counties of Hunan province were hit by violent rain storms. 34 persons were reported dead, 1,399 injured and 510,000 were seriously affected. A UNDRO/UNDP resident representative reported an updated estimate of damage by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on 3 July as follows: 264 dead; 3,775 injured; 71,400 houses collapsed and 159,000 were damaged. New floods hit Hunan province from 25 June to 2 July 1990. According to Chinese authorities, the total damage caused by floods in the province was as follows: 88 counties/cities with 26 million people were affected; 363 people died; 5,805 were injured; 110,000 rooms collapsed; 23,730 rooms were damaged and crops on one million ha were destroyed.
