China: Floods - May 1988

Disaster description

In Fujian province (in particular in counties Jianyang, Chongan, Zhenge), heavy rains caused floods since 20 May. The rain continued as of 24 May with rainfall recorded up to 257 millimeters on 21 May. (UN DHA, 24 May 1988)

Updated information indicates a steep rise in the population affected: 91 deaths, 657 injured, 1 missing, 100,000 people in unreachable areas, and 100,000 displaced. 6,000 houses collapsed and there was damage to 3,908 kilometers of roads, 715 bridges, and 5,937 units of water supply system. The total loss was estimated to be up to 72 million US dollars. (UN DHA, 27 May 1988)
