Disaster description
UN/DHA Resident Representative provides following information on torrential rains affecting the states of Assam, Goa, Kerala and Gujarat as the annual monsoon sweeps the country. In Assam, during a first wave of rains (1-6 June 1994) 199 villages in three districts with a population of 71,000 were affected. 9,000 hectares of standing crop damaged. During second wave (16 June 1994), 76 villages in two districts (Dhemaji and Sivsagar) with 15,000 people affected. 1 person killed. In Goa, 6 persons reported dead. In Kerala, 496 villages in 14 districts with a population of 29,000 affected. 30 persons were killed, 417 houses and 13,000 hectares of crop damaged. In Gujarat, 5 districts (Baruch, Surat, Balsar, Dangs and Junagadh) with 15,000 people affected. 55 deaths reported. (UN DHA, 24 Jun 1994)
Heavy rains and flooding continue to affect India. At least 60,000 people have either been marooned or lost their homes. Official reports say death toll in current rainy season is now over 600. 117 deaths reported in worst-affected state of Gujarat. 67 people reported dead in state of Kerala. Floodwater levels reported receding in states of Gujarat, Madhya, Pradesh, Bihar and Karnataka as of last week. (UN DHA, 26 Jul 1994)
Series of heavy rains and flooding of the current monsoon season which have been seriously affecting India since June has concluded. Govt reports total of 2,001 dead and 634,559 houses damaged by this series of flooding. (UN DHA, 10 Oct 1994)
