Mexico City (dpa) - Heavy rains in the past several days in Mexico have forced thousands out of their homes in the southeastern part of the country because of floods and landslides, officials said Tuesday.

An alert was still in effect as Mexico braced for further onslaughts from several storm systems in what has been a particularly intense rainy season compounded by a hurricane season with numerous storms.

Tropical depression Larry left a swathe of destruction in Chiapas state, on the border with Guatemala.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Two hurricanes that threatened to hit the same area of northwestern Mexico blew themselves out on Monday and oil export ports in the east of the country reopened after another storm there.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said hurricanes Olaf and Nora in the Pacific were downgraded to tropical storms as their wind speed dropped.

Despite the storm downgrade, emergency services evacuated dozens of people from poor neighborhoods on hillsides overlooking the resort of Puerto Vallarta.
