Afghanistan: Floods - Jun 1988

Disaster description

In June 1988, major floods affected provinces of Badakhshan, Herat and Jouzjan in addition to Kabul, Takhar, Samangan, Baghlan. The government reports that 3,457 houses were totally and 1,570 partially devastated, and an estimated 40,000 people, thousand of hectares of cropland, irrigation system and hundreds of km of roads were affected. Total damages estimated by the government were US$260 million. The government has asked UNDRO to launch an appeal for international assistance. The government identified needs for 161,000 victims, including 32,000 children (UN DHA, 27 July 1988)
