Disaster description

A major earthquake measuring 7.5 on the richter scale occurred near USSR-China border, 325 miles east of Tashkent (USSR), close to Wuqia city (China) about 37 miles northeast Kashgar, at 12.42 GMT, 23 August 1985. 67 deaths and more than 100 injured persons were reported. Remote country villages and towns suffered severe damage. 85 percent of houses were destroyed in Wuqia county. Xinjiang regional government and military rescue teams provided relief.
