A. General Context

Since 10 October 2011, an outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported in Harare City. The disease spread to other provinces.

Since week 15 malaria weekly cases reported have been declining.

Chitungwiza city reported a typhoid case in week 27.

No reports of cholera, influenza A and measles outbreaks countrywide.

B. Epidemic prone diseases

Typhoid outbreak

Since 10 October 2011, Harare City has been experiencing an outbreak of typhoid fever. The disease also spread to Chitungwiza City, Mashonaland Central (Bindura district), Mashonaland West (Zvimba and Chegutu districts), Midlands (Chirumanzu district) and Mashonaland East (Marondera) Provinces.

This week 73 cases were reported in Chitungwiza. As of 15 July 2012, the national cumulative number of cases was 4859 and 2 deaths (CFR= 0.04%). The typhoid fever epidemic curve is shown in Figure 1.
