JOHANNESBURG - On July 21, 2006,
ZimOnline published a story alleging that the Zimbabwean government had
directed Goal Zimbabwe, a non-governmental organisation operating in the
country, to stop a supplementary feeding programme for school children
in the district of Hurungwe in Mashonaland West province.
It has since come to our attention that while Goal Zimbabwe is indeed winding up the feeding programme, it is entirely untrue that the organisation is doing so at the orders of the government.
The decision to discontinue the feeding programme was made by Goal Zimbabwe without any pressure or influence whatsoever from the government.
We wish to apologise for the obvious inconvenience caused to Goal Zimbabwe and to the government of Zimbabwe as a result of our erroneous report. We also wish to apologise to Ms Pamela Muzenda, an official at Goal Zimbabwe, who we erroneously quoted confirming part of our story. - Editor
