Flood Update
Record rainfall, to which Tropical Cyclone Dineo recently contributed, has led to floods across Zimbabwe. Almost 2,000 people have been left homeless, with assessment continuing and some areas remaining inaccessible. Significant infrastructure damage has also been reported.
The Cabinet Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Management is leading the response with the support of national and international partners. However, significant gaps exist in all sectors, including Shelter and Non-Food Items; Health and Nutrition; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH); and Education. The Government has officially appealed to all partners to support its emergency relief operations.
Forecasted precipitation concentrations according to SARFFGS
There is still risk of flooding in the country as most parts continue to receive heavy rainfall. Furthermore, the situation is compounded by the fact that the ground is saturated as a result most of the rainfall received is converted to surface runoff which may exacerbate flood conditions.
According to the Flash Flood Guidance system the forecasted areal precipitation is concentrated mainly in the Eastern Highlands and also parts of Masvingo, however flooding is forecasted to be mainly in the Chipinge and Chimanimani Districts.
