Zimbabwe: Flash Appeal Response Monitoring (May 2024 - June 2025) (as of December 2024)

Situational Overview

In 2024, an El Niño-induced drought left 7.6 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid across Zimbabwe. Since December 2023, prolonged dry spells, high temperatures, and inadequate rainfall have severely impacted crops and livestock, reducing food availability and causing water shortages.

In April, the government identified 7.1 million people at risk of food insecurity due to the severe drought. In May 2024, the UN and partners launched a $429.3 million Flash Appeal to support humanitarian efforts targeting 3.1 million of the most vulnerable people and complementing the Government-led response.

By February 2025, only $105 million (24 per cent of the required funds) had been received. The funding shortfalls have limited humanitarian organizations' ability to fully meet the needs of those affected by the drought. Despite this, 55 humanitarian partners scaled up drought response efforts, reaching 0.9 million people— nearly 30 per cent of the target— mainly in areas of acute need. The nutrition cluster reached over 588,220 people, the highest among all clusters.
