Sweden gives US$10m to Zimbabwe

Harare - Sweden Thursday announced a US$10 million aid package for Zimbabwe to help the country tackle humanitarian problems.

The Southern African country is facing severe food shortages, rampant cholera and other diseases and lack of clean water.

Most schools and hospitals have also closed due to lack of funds to pay workers.

Swedish officials said the country was considering resuming aid to Zimbabwe after it formed a unity government last month including the opposition.

The Nordic country, together with most European countries, suspended aid to Zimbabwe several years ago over human rights concerns.

But after the unity government was formed in February, a number of these countries have started to re-engage Zimbabwe.

Last week, Denmark sent a government minister to Zimbabwe on a fact-finding miss ion, followed days later by another top official from Norway.

Both officials said their governments were considering resuming aid to Zimbabwe.

Australia became the first Western country early this month to resume aid to Zimbabwe, giving the country US$10 million.
