Those who are most vulnerable are already suffering - children, those who are ill or elderly. Farmers must plant now, with the first rains. By mid-December it will be too late.
An estimated 11 million people in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi will need food aid to see them through until the next harvests, due in April. Erratic rains across the region caused crops to fail, leading to food shortages and soaring maize prices.
Our church-based partners are well placed to act, but need more resources. In some communities they have been distributing food to those most in need for some time. They are also providing seeds, tools and fertiliser so farmers can plant ahead of the next harvest.
Donations can be made be credit card via the website www.tearfund.org/appeal or by calling 0845 355 8355 (local rate calls) - or by sending a cheque to Freepost, Teddington, Middlesex, TW11 8BR. Cheques should be payable to Tearfund and earmarked for "Southern Africa Crisis".
