The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated NOK 2 million to be used by Save the Children Norway to alleviate the critical situation of children in Zimbabwe that has arisen since the government began its campaign against its own people.
"Norway condemns the campaign the Zimbabwean Government is waging against its own people. It has brutally destroyed the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of the poorest and weakest segments of the population. The operations have further aggravated the precarious human rights situation in Zimbabwe," said Foreign Minister Jan Petersen.
"Norway is following the situation closely. In our view, this is a situation that the neighbouring countries in particular should raise with the authorities in Zimbabwe. In co-operation with the EU and the international community in general, Norway is seeking to persuade the Zimbabwean Government to cease these operations immediately and respect the people's rights by following the country's own laws and fulfilling its international obligations," said the Foreign Minister.
This most recent allocation brings the total amount of Norwegian humanitarian assistance in 2005 up to NOK 15 million.
