Crisis response/refugees

Food assistance for refugees: WFP continues to provide cashbased transfers to refugees and asylum seekers at the Mantapala refugee settlement. In June, WFP assisted 9,480 refugees.

Strengthened Livelihoods and Building Self-Reliance (SLABS) of Refugees in Mantapala Community seed bank deposits: In June, monitoring of the Mantapala community seed bank confirmed increased refugee engagement, surpassing participation levels observed in prior seasons. Households demonstrated strong engagement with the seed banking system, recognising its potential to strengthen future food security and promote self-reliance. As of 30 June, the seed bank had received 3,271.09 kg of maize, 1,761 kg of beans and 24.5 kg of groundnuts.

Financial Literacy Training for Savings Group Leaders: WFP, through its cooperating partner Action Against Hunger (AAH), facilitated financial literacy training for 33 savings group leaders (8 women, 25 men) in Mantapala Refugee Settlement. The training aimed to strengthen the financial management capacity of saving group leaders and, by extension, savings group members, with a focus on budgeting, record-keeping, and informed financial decision-making. Key topics included basic financial concepts such as savings, lending, budgeting, and record-keeping. The leaders are expected to roll out the training to members of their respective savings groups to enhance community-level financial resilience.

Crisis response/drought

Drought response close-out: WFP provided critical droughtresponse assistance to approximately 1,216,000 people across Zambia between August 2024 and June 2025. In June, the final month of the emergency operation, WFP reached 119,050 people through commodity vouchers. Distributions during this final phase covered previously targeted hard-to-reach districts across three provinces: Nalolo and Lukulu in Western Province; Namwala in Southern Province; and Nyimba and Lusangazi in Eastern Province. With the drought-response operation officially concluded at the end of June, WFP remains committed to supporting long-term recovery efforts and strengthening the resilience of communities most affected by the crisis as well as disaster preparedness activities.
