Cholera Situation and WASH Cluster Response
During the third quarter of 2024, WASH Cluster partners responded to several emergencies. The AWD Cholera is still ongoing and as end of September, 31 partners were responding in 134 districts of Yemen. Though the response was scaled up throughout 2024 to reach a total of 948,900 individuals, the cluster is still facing important response gaps in 74 districts reporting cases. The presence gap analysis can be found on the cluster website. The flood season reached its peak during the period July-September impacting severely 26 districts with most affected Governorates being Taiz, Al Hodeidah, Hajjah, Ibb, Sa’dah, Al Jawf, Ma’rib. With the support from partners and hubs’ coordinators, the WASH Cluster developed a damage report identifying 106 WASH projects in need of rehabilitation. The report is available at cluster level. Partners with resources available to rehabilitate these infrastructures are invited to apply flood-resilient approaches. Additional information to implement climate-resilient approaches are available in the Global WASH Cluster Climate adaptation toolkit. During the third semester of 2024, the Nutrition Cluster also reported that the situation was deteriorating on the front of malnutrition in West Coast, with WASH being one of the main contributing factors to the crisis. In these locations, the WASH Cluster advocated for sustainable solutions for water and sanitation, combined with hygiene promotion and hygiene items distribution to households hosting malnourished children and/or breastfeeding and pregnant women. Funding has been allocated to WASH via YHF and CERF. The WASH Cluster developed a strategy to integrate WASH in malnutrition crises. The WASH Cluster continues to establish a sustainable pipeline with the support of IOM as the hosting agency. The WASH Cluster common pipeline is expected to be operational by December 2024. All interested partners will be able to request supplies from the cluster pending the provision of a recent assessment.
