Highlights
In August, WFP plans to reach 2.5 million beneficiaries throughout Yemen.
An additional USD 21 million are urgently needed to support activities under PRRO 200636 in 2014.
Situation Update
Yemen is the poorest country in the Arab region and is the 7th most food-insecure country in the world.
According to the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan, 14.7 million people, more than half of the Yemeni population, require humanitarian assistance in 2014. These needs remain largely unchanged from 2013.WFP’s 2014 Comprehensive Food Security Survey highlighted that 41 percent of the population (10.6 million people) are food insecure, including 19.3 percent who are severely food insecure
WFP Response
WFP’s new Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO)—with a total budget of USD 490 million— started in July, supporting a gradual shift from relief to recovery. Through the PRRO, WFP plans to assist six million people over two years through a range of activities including food and cash distributions, food assistance for work and assets, treatment and prevention of acute and chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, and meals and take home rations for schoolchildren.
Under the a second PRRO (200305), WFP provides assistance to refugees from the Horn of Africa.
Food Assistance
In August, WFP plans to reach 2.5 million beneficiaries throughout Yemen: 256,557 under PRRO 200305 and 2,486,498 under PRRO 200636.
The first cycle of cash distributions for beneficiaries under PRRO 200636 protective safety net activities was completed. Some 56,000 households in Ibb and Taizz governorates received two month entitlements amounting to USD 55 per household.
