THE HUMANITARIAN COMMUNITY APPEALS FOR URGENT SUPPORT IN 2024 TO BRING LIFE-SAVING AID TO MILLIONS

On 1 February 2024, the UN and partners released the 2024 Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) and Response Plan (HRP) for Yemen, bringing attention to the millions of civilians suffering across the country for years.

In 2024, 18.2 million people need assistance. The UN-brokered truce, which lasted formally until October 2022, and its de facto continuation throughout 2023, saw some slight improvements in humanitarian conditions. Reduced hostilities led to fewer reported civilian casualties, and child mortality rates improved following years of sustained humanitarian assistance.

However, the current regional conflict dynamics have introduced new risks. These slight improvements in the humanitarian situation could easily be reversed if the risks are manifested and humanitarian assistance is curtailed.

Overall, the situation remains dire this year. Severe deterioration of economic conditions, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, and the collapse of essential services are critical drivers of large-scale vulnerabilities and needs countrywide. 17.6 million people are facing food insecurity, and nearly half of all children under five suffer from moderate to severe stunting. 4.5 million people remain displaced, many of whom have experienced multiple displacements over several years.
