Situation Overview

Recent heavy rains and flash floods across Yemen have caused extensive damage to internally displaced persons (IDP) sites, homes, and infrastructure, affecting thousands of families, many of whom have been displaced for years. The floods have disrupted livelihoods, submerged farmlands, and severely harmed livestock, threatening food security. There are significant concerns about potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases due to contaminated water sources. Additionally, unexploded ordnances have been dislocated by the floods, posing further risks to affected communities and the humanitarian actors involved in the response.

UNHCR, as the lead agency of the Protection, Shelter/NFI, and CCCM Clusters, is coordinating with local partners and humanitarian actors to provide immediate assistance to affected populations through shelter, non-food items (NFI), protection services, and cash assistance. According to OCHA, initial reports indicate that almost 34,260 families have been affected by the rains and flooding across 19 governorates, with Al Hudaydah, Hajjah, Marib, Sa’ada, and Ta’iz being severely impacted. Additionally, reports of floods and storms affecting other locations have also been received, and UNHCR and partners are undertaking further preparedness actions in anticipation of more heavy rains in the coming days.
