In response to the impact of cyclone Tej in Yemen, DG ECHO has secured a total of EUR 150,000 for the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) to respond to the immediate humanitarian needs. The operation is supporting the Yemeni Red Crescent to respond to the needs of 14,000 people (2,000 households) in Al Maharah, Hadramawt and Socotra Governorates with shelter and hygiene items.

Over 18,000 households are estimated to be affected by the landfall of tropical cyclone Tej in Eastern Yemen. The extremely heavy rains and floods have caused damage to civilian homes and public infrastructure, including healthcare facilities and water networks, across Al Maharah, Hadramawt and Socotra governorates.

Prior to the cyclone, local authorities, community leaders and volunteers, supported by partners, launched a campaign urging people to stay home. This had a significant impact on reducing human and material loss.

The DREF operation complements the assistance already mobilized by the humanitarian community.
