Description of the Event

What happened, where and when?

Tropical cyclone TIJ made landfall over the southern coast of Al Mahrah Governorate on the night of 23 October and continued to move northwestward. On 24 October at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 20 km south of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and 240 km west-southwest of Salalah (Oman). According to the media, some houses have been severely impacted, as well as roads and crops in Al-Mahra Governorate. In addition, interruptions of the communications and electricity networks have been reported. The authorities of Al-Mahra Governorate asked the citizens living in the affected areas to go to nearby shelters. TIJ is forecast to move further north-westward weakening and dissipating on 25 October. For the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the Al-Mahra, Hadramout, and Shabwa Governorates of Yemen and over the Dhofar governorate in Oman. ( ECHO Daily Flash of 24 October 2023)
