KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • On March 7, the fifth Ministerial Friends of Yemen meeting was held in London. Foreign ministers and delegations from approximately 30 countries attended the meeting, including U.S. Department of State Deputy Secretary William Burns. Meeting participants discussed a number of topics, including the need for continued humanitarian support for IDP and refugee populations. The 2013 YHRP requests $716 million and aims to provide assistance to 7.7 million vulnerable people in Yemen.

  • USAID/OFDA recently provided nearly $4 million to support health, nutrition, and WASH interventions through partner Save the Children/U.S. (SC/US). These activities will reach more than 81,000 beneficiaries in both northern and southern Yemen, including Al Hudaydah, Sa’dah, and Ta’izz governorates.

  • In 2013, Yemen has received nearly 18,000 new refugees, most of whom are of Somali or Ethiopian origin, according to UNHCR. State/PRM recently provided $2.6 million in additional funding to an implementing partner to provide health care, WASH support, and capacity building assistance for Yemeni conflict victims.
