HIGHLIGHTS
• Precipitation Trends for December 2024: Yemen experienced expected dry conditions, with minimal rainfall across the country.
• Rainfall Anomalies: The dry conditions in many areas worsened water scarcity and hindered agricultural productivity, particularly in areas reliant on residual moisture and light showers.
• Temperature Patterns: Highland areas experienced cooler weather, with nighttime temperatures dropping below 5°C, increasing the risk of frost. In contrast, coastal and lowland regions enjoyed mild and habitable daytime temperatures.
• Vegetation Performance: Vegetation health was poor in eastern and coastal governorates, including Hadramaut, Al Maharah, Shabwah, Abyan, Aden, and Lahj, where prolonged dry conditions limited forage availability and stressed vegetation.
• Impacts on Agricultural Livelihoods: Reduced soil moisture due to dry conditions posed risks to crop growth, particularly for sorghum and millet, which require extended wet periods. Frost in the highlands likely inhibited winter crop development and posed challenges to livestock health.
• Food Security: Declining agricultural productivity, coupled with rising costs for external inputs, exacerbated food insecurity, especially in vulnerable areas.
