Highlights
- The food security situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, with 64 percent of the population nationwide facing inadequate food consumption – once again the highest ever recorded by WFP in Yemen.
- WFP in September completed distributions under its Rapid Emergency Response (RER), with 1.4 million people assisted in 34 districts in areas under the Sana’a-based authorities.
- In areas under the internationally recognized Government of Yemen, WFP in September started the third food assistance cycle of 2024, targeting 3.6 million people.
- To cover unaddressed needs in areas affected by recent floods, WFP provided food assistance to 157,000 flood-affected people nationwide in September.
SITUATION UPDATE
Food security situation:
- As the food security situation continues to deteriorate, severe levels of food deprivation (poor food consumption) have now nearly doubled over the past year in areas under the Sana’a-based authorities (SBA, north operational area).
- In areas under the internationally recognized Government (IRG, south operational area), the cost of the minimum food basket has reached a historic peak and has now increased by 23 percent year-on-year.
UN/WFP Staff Safety and Security:
- 13 UN staff members (including one WFP national staff member), detained by SBA security forces in early June, remain in custody.
