Key Highlights:

  • September 2024 data revealed a month-on-month improvement in food consumption levels, with households reporting inadequate food consumption decreasing to 60% from 64% in August. The temporary respite was primarily attributed to the resumption of food assistance programs in the north, receding floods, and cereal harvests.
  • While comparing Year-on-Year, the prevalence of inadequate food consumption increased nationwide by 20%. Significant regional disparities were observed in September. In IRG-controlled areas, 64% of households faced inadequate food consumption, with severe deprivation increasing by 39% YoY. In SBA-controlled areas, 57% of households reported inadequate food consumption, and poor food consumption rose by 51% YoY.
  • A high reliance on extreme coping mechanisms was observed in September, with 52% of households adopting severe consumption based coping strategies, especially in the north (54%). Common practices included reducing meal sizes (77%) and consuming less preferred foods (71%). Severe livelihood challenges were noted, with strategies such as begging (9% in the north) and selling assets becoming prevalent.
  • Internally displaced persons (IDPs) were particularly affected, with 64% of IDP households unable to meet their minimum food needs, and severe food deprivation surged to 36% in September.
  • In IRG areas, the Yemeni Riyal depreciated by 25% YoY, leading to a 23% rise in food basket costs and record-high fuel prices due to economic instability and import challenges.
