YEMEN: As the new school year unfolds in Yemen, children are stepping into classrooms with fresh hope and essential school supplies. In areas like Aden, Kharaz Refugee Camp, Al-Mukalla, and Marib, over 5,000 refugee and asylum-seeker children are receiving school kits to help them succeed. Some schools began their school year in July and others in late August, marking an important moment for students eager to return to learning.

Thanks to the support and acceptance of local authorities, refugee children are able to access education alongside their Yemeni peers. For many, this moment represents much more than the start of a new school year—it is a step toward a brighter future.

Essential School Kits for Refugees

UNHCR’s back-to-school campaign ensures that refugee and asylum-seeker children have the materials they need to learn. The school kits include backpacks, school uniforms, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other supplies. While these supplies are provided for refugees and asylum seekers, UNHCR also supports six schools where both refugee and host community children can learn side by side.

In Basateen, Aden, 2,150 refugee children have received these kits. For students like Mohamed, age 13, who dreams of becoming a police officer, the school year brings excitement. “I like school, especially my Arabic class,” he says. Fluent in Somali and Arabic, Mohamed enjoys learning alongside his Yemeni classmates. During breaks, he plays football with friends—using a plastic bottle filled with sand when they don’t have a ball.
