ADEN – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, together with local authorities in Aden, officially broke ground today on the Al-Arish Wastewater Pumping Station—a landmark project that aims to improve sanitation services, public health, and environmental conditions in one of Yemen’s most densely populated urban areas.
The project is generously funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, reflecting the State of Kuwait’s strong commitment to supporting essential development and humanitarian efforts in Yemen. Local authorities also contributed to the first phase, demonstrating their commitment to expanding basic infrastructure and service delivery in Aden.
“This is a strategic and much-needed initiative for Aden,” said H.E. Mr. Ahmed Hamed Lamlas, Minister of State and Governor of Aden. “It addresses urgent health and environmental concerns and lays the groundwork for future urban development. We deeply appreciate the support of the Kuwait Fund and remain committed to working with our international partners to build a healthier, more sustainable city.”
Once completed, the Al-Arish station is expected to significantly improve wastewater management and reduce environmental pollution across several districts—bringing tangible benefits to refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities alike.
“This project is a testament to what can be achieved through strong collaboration between humanitarian actors, donors, and local authorities,” said Mr. Mohammad Rafiq Nasry, Head of UNHCR’s Sub-Office in Aden. “We are grateful to the Kuwait Fund for their generous support and long-standing commitment to the people of Yemen.”
He added: “Access to safe sanitation is not only a basic need—it is a foundation for public health, human dignity, and long-term recovery. UNHCR remains committed to investing in infrastructure that delivers real, lasting impact for displaced families and the communities that host them.”
The groundbreaking marks the start of construction and implementation of the Al-Arish Pumping Station, a key part of broader efforts to strengthen essential services and improve living conditions in Aden for communities affected by conflict and displacement.
