On February 28, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message statement at the High-Level Pledging Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The overview of the event is as follows.

  1. At the beginning, the co-chairs of the event, including H.E. Mr. António GUTERRES, Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Ignazio CASSIS, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, and H.E. Mr. Johan FORSSELL, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of the Kingdom of Sweden, provided an explanation about the serious humanitarian situation in Yemen caused by the protracted conflict, which is considered "the world’s worst humanitarian crisis", and called for the importance of the international community's assistance for Yemen.

  2. Minister Hayashi expressed, in the statement, Japan's determination to continue to contribute to the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Yemen as a major donor country, and stated that Japan has already decided to provide at least approximately 19 million US dollars of additional humanitarian assistance in 2023. Minister Hayashi also stated that he hopes that Japan’s assistance will contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.

  3. Minister Hayashi again called on the parties concerned, especially the Houthis, to take necessary actions to renew the truce in Yemen, paving the way for constructive talks towards realizing durable peace. Minister Hayashi also stated that Japan, as a member of the UN Security Council and the G7 Presidency, will continue to provide necessary assistance and make diplomatic efforts, in cooperation with the countries concerned, to realize peace and stability in Yemen.
