This Livelihood zone revision report was written following a national consultation workshop that was held in Aden.
In accordance with the terms and references, the livelihood zone update national consultative workshop was conducted for areas under the Government of Yemen areas. It is expected that a similar update will be carried out for the areas under Sana’a Based Authority controlled areas to have a complete update for the livelihood zones in Yemen. The areas under Sana’a Based Authority were therefore left uncoloured until a similar exercise will be conducted.
The review of the livelihood zone map fundamentally concluded that the map devised in 2010 was basically sound. That is, the 14 rural livelihood zones identified were appropriate, except that for reasons of geographical isolation, climate and aspects of production and trading, Socotra Island was now decided to be a separate zone rather than part of the greater Yemen Coastal Fishing zone (YE07). Secondly, despite all the damaging events of the intervening years, it was concluded that there had not been fundamental changes to the livelihoods in the zones – and indeed that the original names of the zones, based mainly on production, could stand. But importantly, the boundaries of four of the zones required modification, and in one case substantial alteration was made.
