Oxfam Yemen Situation Report #21, 30 May 2016

Humanitarian crisis continues: The UN humanitarian chief in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, on 2 June called Yemen an “invisible crisis” and expressed regret at the lack of international concern given to the country. He said that “the scale of the emergency is tremendous. The scale of the need is massive and the depth of the crisis is immeasurable”. According to the UN official, government services and the health system were hardly functioning before the conflict and “the war has all but broken them completely”. He said that humanitarian access has improved during the almost two months of ceasefire, but that civilians in Yemen are still facing an “immeasurable” crisis. The UN reported that 10,000 children have died from preventable diseases since the start of the conflict in March last year because of the near-total collapse of the healthcare system.
