SITUATION OVERVIEW
Throughout August, torrential rains, flash floods, and extreme windstorms wreaked havoc across Yemen. OCHA issued several reports highlighting the impacts of these severe weather events on thousands of already vulnerable households. In Ma’rib, 73 IDP sites—an estimated 58,000 individuals—across Ma’rib City, Ma’rib Al Wadi, and Raghwan districts were severely affected. In Al Hodeidah, all 26 districts were impacted, affecting more than 9,000 families.
In Ta’iz, more than 5,100 families were affected by flooding, while in Sana’a, at least 550 families’ homes were submerged under water. Similarly, in Ibb, an estimated 1,500 families were affected, and nine deaths have been recorded so far.
The extensive flooding further exacerbates concerns about the spread of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) and cholera amidst the ongoing outbreak. WHO’s Cholera External Situation Report, published on 15 August, indicated 24,803 cases with 140 deaths in Yemen during the period from 1 January to 28 July 2024.
