17 April 2025, Sana’a, Yemen — With generous funding from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), UNICEF has concluded a three-year project that reached over 53,780 out-of-school and displaced children across five governorates in Yemen with vital education and child protection services.

Implemented between July 2021 and June 2024, the initiative provided safe, inclusive learning opportunities to 53,780 out-of-school children in Taiz, Hodeidah, Marib, Ibb, and Hajjah. Children enrolled in non-formal education programmes—including catch-up classes, Basic Literacy and Numeracy, Self-learning and Accelerated Learning—received essential school supplies, while temporary learning spaces were rapidly established during emergencies to prevent disruptions.

Additionally, over 3,100 teachers benefitted from pedagogical skills gained through a structured series of training opportunities that aimed at improving teaching and learning practices in the classroom.

Nearly a total of 3,521 teachers and education staff received monthly performance-based incentives to maintain teaching quality. The project also established 597 Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) and rehabilitated 803 classroom, and 292 WASH facilities.

Beyond education, 50,439 children accessed psychosocial support, 51,531 children received mine risk education, and 2,000 children were assisted through individualized case management in Marib and Taiz. The initiative also strengthened local ownership by training community committees and facilitating coordination meetings with education stakeholders.

“This project exemplifies how strategic partnerships can help children not only survive crisis but also thrive through education and protection,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF Representative in Yemen. “We are deeply grateful to ECHO for its unwavering commitment to the children of Yemen.”

This project reaffirms UNICEF and ECHO’s shared dedication to safeguarding children’s rights in Yemen—ensuring that even in the most difficult circumstances, learning and healing can continue.
