The Nutrition Cluster Mid-Year Review Meeting, the first of its kind to be organized virtually took place on the 5th October 2020. The review meeting brought together 58 participants that included: Ministry of Public Health and Population (MoPHP), UN agencies the NGOs and nutrition cluster coordination team to reflect on the nutrition situation and taking stock of the programme response performance for the period January to July 2020.
The opening remarks by the MoPHP in Aden and Sana’a and UNICEF as the nutrition cluster lead agency appreciated the resilience of partners and all stakeholders which has enabled continuity of nutrition service delivery in amidst various constraints including: the Covid 19 pandemic that has further compounded existing vulnerabilities experienced by beneficiaries especially the under-five children, pregnant and lactating women and various operational challenges. The combination of the challenges above affected activities such as capacity building, physical quarterly review meeting and implementation of mobile teams one of the response modalities targeting the hard to reach populations. However, it is noted, despite these challenges, generous resources by the donors, and efforts by MoPHP, UN agencies, NGO partners and the nutrition cluster coordination team, enabled and facilitated continued delivery of nutrition services in the country including remote locations. The MOHP also highlighted several challenges (logistic, supervision, implementation of services in COVID -19, timely delivery of supplies, delay in payments etc) that were expected to be addressed during the mid-year review.
The cluster lead agency (UNICEF) noted also the mid-year review to be an important forum in taking stock of the achievements, transparently identify bottlenecks and suggest remedial actions to address nutrition operational challenges faced by partners in the course of implementing life-saving nutrition responses for the children of Yemen.
The main objectives of the Nutrition Cluster Mid -Year Review Meeting were to:
1. Update on the current nutrition situation and trends;
2. Determine nutrition program achievement for January to August 2020 against set targets;
3. Identify challenges and lessons learnt in achieving the 2020 cluster workplan;
4. Review the 2020 nutrition cluster response strategies
5. Revise the Annual Work Plan activities, taking into consideration of the performance, challenges and opportunities.
