Can you imagine a shelter without a roof? How difficult to live in a place like that.

Unfortunately, many families live this miserable life in different areas of Yemen.

Poverty affects most people in the whole country. However, the situation in Al-Balassah area from Barat Al-Anan of Al-Jawf governorate today has sadly reached new levels of desperation. Bassam, a 28-year-old worker, lives in Al-Balassah village, where job opportunities are pretty much nonexistent. He has suffered year after year from massive failures. Struggling to feed his 6 children, Bassam, and his family members live in a small place which called the house, while in reality, it is not. That dad always fights and sacrifices to have at least a roof for the kitchen and the bathroom. He also faces many difficulties purchasing food and basic needs for his family.

Living a difficult life and struggling to face challenges with economic crises for years in the whole country, the intervention of Food Assistance for Assets was for them a lifeboat. Every person, family, and country affected by a crisis deserves our attention and support.

Since then, Building Foundation for Development (BFD) and World Food Programme (WFP) are adopting ways to help families to break the cycle of poverty. With multiple aims including the alleviating of poverty, creation, and rehabilitation of communities' assets, and building the beneficiaries' capacities to be ready for the labor market through the Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) activity, they target various areas in Yemen.

Like other vulnerable people in his area, Bassam has been selected as a beneficiary of the project, He is a hardworking and optimistic person who learned how to form stones easily. After some time, he succeeded. In addition to that, the money received as entitlements for working in asset rehabilitation helped them to improve the life standard of his family and to build a roof for his home.

"In winter, my children always get sick because we are living in a home without a roof but after receiving the cash assistance, I am thinking of the construction of a roof to it and protect my family members from cold'', said Bassam.

He hoped for sustainability for such projects, which serve the community and assist numerous beneficiaries. ''My family and I are delighted to have such interventions,'' he confirmed. "Having a skill in your hand that is considered as a victory.", Bassam added.
